What we see in the media has a strong effect on our beliefs. That’s one of the reasons Hamas Fake News has been so successful. They get their version out first, regardless of how truthful it may be. The media parrots it because, among other reasons, it helps them get more viewers (and advertisers). Keep that in mind while you think about what I’m going to present next.
Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel since the Hamas attack in October. But the US government claims it is trying to avoid a wider war. What do they think is happening on the Israel-Lebanon border a picnic? Of course it’s an actual war! And it was started by Hezbollah! What they are really trying to do is control the conflict for their own benefit. Biden was holding back large US bombs, not because of concern over Rafah, but to help prevent Israel from wider attacks in Lebanon.
The leaders on the Arab side may also live in an imaginary world of their own. Arab TV and newspapers often carry stories about Israeli street protests against the Netanyahu government. Some of the Arabic press interprets this as heralding a collapse of the Israeli state, not just the government. The feeling that Israel won’t act without a US OK has already resulted in some pretty wild threat by Hezbollah leader Nasrallah. He has threatened that an Israeli ground attack will lead to direct involvement of Iranian forces in the war. He also threatened to directly attack Cyprus. Such threats might be prompted by the idea that he would never have to carry them out.
Hamas representative Ahmad Abd-Al-Hadi said the October attack came to thwart any possible move toward an agreement that would not include Hamas. “We would do it again”, he said, in order to stop peace.
Israeli papers have recently noted that war with Hezbollah might leave the national electric grid vulnerable. Other articles warned that the quantity of Hezbollah rockets might overwhelm IDF defenses, and that the public was not prepared for a “real” war. Could those articles also be intended to foster a sense that the IDF wouldn’t dare to attack Hezbollah?
And did anyone notice that Hezbollah not only shot first, but that that they are also on the border in direct defiance to UNSC resolution 1701?
