Gaza War 22 Jul

American President Biden announced he was dropping out of the race for reelection. This may increase the chances for Donald Trump to win the office. It also raises a potential problem. Secretary of State Blinken has said that Iran needs only about 2 more weeks to be able to put together a nuclear weapon. This may not include the ability to match it to a missile and make it deliverable it, but it does mean that Iran is really about to join the nuclear club. American policy has been that they won’t allow that to happen. The question is, will Iran go ahead and do it anyway? Building an A-bomb while Biden is still president looks like a much more attractive option than waiting until after the US elections and trying to do it with Trump coming into office. Biden has not demonstrated a willingness to act decisively in some other confrontations. Might this one be different? And if he doesn’t act, would Israel take the initiative to eliminate what for them is a real existential threat? It may be time to re-read Herman Kahn’s old books; “Thinking About the Unthinkable”, and “On Thermonuclear War”.
