Cognitive Dissonance is a term I’ve mentioned before. It’s the uncomfortable feeling you have when you realize that you are expressing belief in two mutually incompatible ideas. It’s the way US VP Kamala Harris should feel when she says that an Israeli ground operation in Rafah would be a big mistake. The US government knows that Hamas is a terrorist body that really cares nothing for the welfare of the Palestinians it purports to represent. That same US government claims that the welfare of the Palestinians in Gaza requires that the US protest Hamas from destruction. Worse, Hamas must be aided remain in power as the rulers of the Gaza strip. The US proposed a binding UN Security Council resolution for an immediate cease-fire in the current Israel-Hamas War. They must have been very relieved when China and Russia vetoed the resolution. It saved them, at least for now, from a direct confrontation with Israel.
America, and several other countries, makes a show of supporting Israel’s right to defend itself from attack. That support meant that the constant ongoing rocket fire into Israel from Hezbollah in Lebanon was supposed to be deterred by a word from US President Biden; “Don’t”. That word was not effective. American half-hearted air attacks on Yemen have not caused the Houthi regime to cease its’ illegal interference with international shipping (especially vessels that have no connection at all to the Gaza War). When was the last time the US government or media looked seriously at Iranian progress towards building a nuclear bomb? Was it when they released $10 billion in frozen Iranian assets in order to put a stop to terrorist attacks on US bases in Syria and Iraq? The Israelis may yet succeed in finding a cooperative route that allows the IDF to move into Rafah.
Meanwhile, the Russians are blaming Ukraine for the deadly Islamist terror attack in Moscow. It was carried out by ISIS, a Sunni radical group that the US thought they had eliminated. Hamas is a Shiite radical group. Maybe that’s why the US is protecting them.
