The latest threat in the ongoing contest to promote deterrence comes from an Iraqi puppet group. They warned the US that American interests in Iraq (and beyond) will be endangered if the US helps Israel against Hezbollah. This threat was preceded by an American warning that the US will not be able to restrain Israel if Hezbollah continues shooting.
The struggle in the legal theater entered a new phase recently when 2 separate civil suits were filed. The first was registered in the US by relatives of the massacre victims and seeks damages from UNRWA (The UN is headquartered in NY) because UNRWA employees participated in the attack.
The second case was filed in Israel. The Knesset had passed a bill allowing frozen assets of the Palestinian Authority to be used to pay compensation to terror victims. The PA (who pays regular stipends to imprisoned terrorists and the families of “martyrs”) wants to have the law annulled. They aren’t asking for the money to be unfrozen (yet). The very fact that they are filing a suit lends emphasis to the fact that the PA is actually broke. They haven’t had cash to pay salaries for several months. The US cut back on subsidies to the PA and was followed by similar actions from some other countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The PA is apparently well on the way to becoming the “failed state” that many expected. even in the days when Yasser Arafat was their president.
