At about 01:50 last night we were awakened by the sound of an explosion from the interception of an Iranian missile launched at Israel. It was followed by about 7 more, and the wail of our air raid sirens. The boom frightened our dog. He began trembling and didn’t calm down for over an hour. But for us, that was the sum total of the effect of the Iranian response to the killing of their top general in Syria 2 weeks ago.
Iran says the incident is concluded (I hope it is). That means we can begin to analyze it. He Iranians had to do something to avoid appearing weak. They chose to send a massive attack of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles (over 300 in total) at Israeli targets. It may have been the largest such attack ever mounted, and it was a miserable failure. The only thing it really did was to let Iran claim to have avenged their loss. Operationally, several drones failed technically. One is reported to have exploded on leaving the firing rail, killing the launch crew. Another came down in Jordan and may have killed 3 Jordanians. Jordanian forces participated in the defense effort. The Israeli Air defense systems took out most of the attackers. American naval assets claimed that 70+ drones and 3 missiles were shot down by them. RAF fighters from Cyprus flew to Israel to help. A French ship en route home shot down one drone launched from Yemen. The only known Israeli casualty was a 10 year old Bedouin girl hit in the head by shrapnel. Bottom line: an impressive showing by the IDF air defenses, and a very poor demonstration of Iranian capabilities. But the attack was really only meant for show.
The media has already returned to reporting Gazan “genocide” and other aspects of their usual Israeli bashing (mostly) fake news.
