Hamas (possibly with Saudi Help?) has convinced US President Biden that the solution to the crisis in the area is the establishment of a Palestinian State. The UK Foreign Minister, David Cameron, even took the idea one step further. He raised the possibility of unilateral recognition of such a state.
There is an amazing lack of knowledge of history (and logic) behind these positions. In 1947 the UN Partition resolution gave the Palestinian Arabs a state. They just weren’t prepared to handle it (thanks to the mentoring of Great Britain who was supposed to have trained someone to take over). Of course, they didn’t call it Palestine yet. The Palestine Liberation Organization wasn’t established until 1964, Even Israel is on record as ready for a Palestinian State (with recognized borders and an ability to live peacefully alongside Israel). The missing element is that Hamas (and Fatah, ruling the PA) don’t want their Palestinian State, They want ours. Their founding documents call for the destruction of Israel and replacing it with an Arab state. So much for living peacefully, side by side.
Then there is the border question. Everybody talks about the 1967 “borders”. Well, there is no such thing! The 1967 lines were cease-fire (“truce”) lines. All the cease fire agreements that included those lines specify that permanent borders need to be established by further negotiations between the parties. Such negotiations never took place because the Arab states refused to take part (the infamous 3 noes of the 1967 Arab League summit in Khartoum- No peace, no recognition, no negotiations). Those cease-fire lines existed from 1949 to 1967, less than 18 years. Both Egypt and Jordan have since then signed Peace treaties with Israel and the borders in those documents are NOT based on the 1967 lines. Calling the 1967 lines borders is often taken from UN resolution 242 that calls for Israel to withdraw from territories occupied in the 6 day war. Israel views those as liberated, not occupied, and bases this on the further call for negotiations to determine final borders.
