I like to think that i have a high degree of expertise in the subject of ship camouflage. After all, I’ve published a book on American Ship Camouflage in WWI (The Easter Egg Fleet) and my blogs about Japanese ship camouflage in WWII are among the very first things you see if you do a Google search on that subject. That’s why I felt embarrassed when someone else published a photo of an Italian ship in 1918 camouflage colors. I was too quick to confirm his identification of the ship in question.
I did post a correction this morning. The ship(s) involved are a group of three Italian oil tankers. All were camouflaged in 1918. All were named ANSALDO. They were differentiated by a a number ; ANSALDO I, ANSALDO II, and ANSALDO III. Each one had a different camouflage pattern. Here they are.
These show the starboard side. The port side design was not the same.
