About 20 years ago the Maytag Washing machine that we brought from the US broke down for good. I had repaired it twice myself (no big deal, just replacing the rubber belt that turned the drum) and we had it fixed once outside home (welding the belt wheel to the drum drive when the screw holding it no longer was working). We got another Maytag, second hand, from someone moving to a smaller apartment where there was no room for a big American Machine. That Maytag was already about 18 years old, and it served us faithfully till now. This time it was simply not worth repairing. Rest in Peace old machine. It was 38 years old.
We still needed a washing machine so we went shopping. We ended by buying a new Seimans machine. It’s going to take a while to get used to using it. Firstly. because it is a front loader. The Maytag loaded from the top. Second, i uses an internal heater when anything other than plain cold water is selected. The Maytag had separate inputs for hot and cold. The new machine also allows for selecting specific temperatures instead of simply Hot, Warm, or Cold. The spin dry speed can also be selected. In short, it is a modern device with a much wider range of choices. Just the thing for an old couple who seem to spend so much time thinking about the past.
Oh, Yes. It has one more feature that I had not mentioned. It is super quiet. I used to listen for when the old Maytag motor stopped to when to go hang things out to dry. Not any more! The new machine announces it has finished with a soft, polite, little series of 3 bells. If you missed them, it will repeat the bell, but still in an unobtrusive low volume voice that I find easy to miss.
It came with three instruction booklets. One in English, one in Hebrew, and one in Arabic. The first load I tried included a large tablecloth. There were no problems. Seems like we are being pulled into the 21st century, and we aren’t even resisting.
