I was unable to get this off yesterday, but, as I promised, here are a few items connected with UNRWA and involvement in education.
- UNRWA operated (prior to Oct 2023) 183 schools in Gaza, serving some 285,000 students.
- The curriculum taught is controlled by the host country, in this case the Palestine Authority. Their educational materials were extremely biased (anti-Semitic, not just anti-Israel) resulting in continuing complaints from Israeli authorities. They did attempt a revision of the PA curriculum in 2016, but the textbooks
remained openly anti-Semitic and continued to encourage violence, jihad and martyrdom. Peace is not taught as preferable or even possible. Extreme nationalism and Islamist ideologies proliferate throughout the curriculum, including in science and math textbooks. (my personal experience with this was that the only change was to replace the covers on the books). The revision was funded by the UN.
24 teaching staff at UNRWA schools, most of them in senior leadership positions, were confirmed to be registered members of terror groups with roughly half of them having documented possession of firearms and explosives. despite receiving written warnings from the Israeli government regarding specific employees’ terrorist affiliations, UNRWA did not fire them. (The New York Times, December 8, 2024).
the Wall Street Journal exposed Israeli intelligence reports that at least 12 UNRWA employees had participated in the October 7th attack and that 1,200 UNRWA employees in Gaza—representing 10% of UNRWA’s Gaza workforce—are Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives.
The end result: UN fired 9 people (2 others were already dead).
Generations of “Palestinian” refugees have been taught to hate Jews while UNRWA pays for this to happen.
I put Palestinian in quotes because the original homes of the original 700,000 refugees registered with UNRWA is another fiction that I will address in future
