It’s very frustrating to constantly hear Israel being blamed for anything bad that happens during the war. No one seems to remember that it was Hamas that attacked Israel and kidnapped, raped and murdered whomever they found. I have a small paperback book titled “The Longest War. It’s about the Iraq-Iran conflict which lasted from 1980 to 1988. The Arab- Israeli war have gone on for more than 75 years. The fighting has not always been intense, but it has not stopped. If the UN (and other major powers) were to think seriously about how to end the conflict instead of how to control it it might have ended long ago. But those parties are still blinded by the idea that conflicts must be solved by diplomatic compromises. When one of the parties (in this case, the Arabs) refuses to accept any solution other than what they demand, an approach that does not impose penalties for non-compliance has lile chance to succeed, The Arab side, in one form or another, has declined to try to reach a negotiated solution since 1949. The Arab world is not monolithic. The main block to negotiations comes from the Palestinians (an entity that did not exist in 1949) and has been joined by various Islamic radical religious groups including the theocratic rulers of Iran.
I’ve mentioned the UN approach to making and preserving the peace before. In the case of Hezbollah firing rockets into Israel (which they have been doing daily for almost 11 months) The UN hasn’t even discussed the problem. Hezbollah is not a UN nation member. Non Governmental Organizations have become one of the choices for UN member nations to avoid acting in accordance with the UN Charter.
