Israel is subjected to rocket attacks aimed (imperfectly or sometimes even unintentionally) at civilian targets on a daily basis. Those attacks rarely hurt anyone because the IDF is effective in defending against them. This morning a large missile was launched against Israel from Lebanon. It fell inside Lebanese territory and caused a loud explosion. The noise was enough to have Israeli TV and radio report about it in order not to have any panic or concern. Why the missile failed to get across the border was not reported. It might have been a launching error (or material defect?) on the part of Hezbollah, or it might have been Israeli cyber warfare or defensive missiles that caused it to crash. But th event does highlight a defect in the reports of international media. They seem to need dead bodies in order to say anything. The fact that both Hamas and Hezbollah fire rockets every day is not reported. But if an Israeli counter strike occurs, that’s newsworthy. The IDF actions do sometimes cause casualties. If they don’t, the Hamas propaganda machine can make them up. The Hamas Gaza Health Ministry keeps a running count of Palestinian dead. It does talk about women and children, but never mentions if any of the dead are, or were, Hamas terrorists. Another point never reported on by Hamas is that the missiles are normally launched from locations close to civilian structures. They do that in order to increase the chances of an Israeli counter blow causing civilian casualties. For the, the war is currently about staying in the headlines and hopefully causing increased international pressure on Israel.
