The past day did not set any records for good news. Hams left the hostage release talks with a claim that the US was biased in favor of Israel, and that the Hamas conditions were not being met. They did not say when (or if) they would return. American intelligence sources are reported as saying that Iran will be executing their ‘retaliatory’ strike against Israel in the very near future. Iran has closed of the airspace over some military bases. The US 5th fleet is on high alert. German airlines, Lufthansa, have canceled flights to Iran for the next 24 hours. There are a lot of expectations, but, so far, no real action.
There has also been a disclosure that German funds intended for rebuilding the sewer system in Gaza were actually diverted by Hamas and used to construct their military tunnel system instead. I am not aware of any evidence that the German government knew about this, but they did not make provisions to ensure that something like this would not happen.
There is still talk about recognizing a Palestinian State without considering any guarantees that such a state would live in peace with its neighbors (or defining borders). In the absence of those items any talk must really be taken as just an expression of support for Hamas. It has nothing to do with really solving the conflict or with any real or imagined humanitarian issues. The people that make those statements are just looking to make political points in the media (even if Hamas wants to interpret it otherwise).
