For the past week we have been having miserable weather. Oh, it’s not like we’re snowed in or anything like that. It’s just been constantly cold. Our temperatures range between 8 and 13 degrees /Celsius. That’s not really very cold compared to Europe or America. But it FEELS cold to us. The heavy layers of cloud cover make it feel colder than it really is. And, of course, being restricted to home by the virus pandemic doesn’t make it any better. The almost constant intermittent light drizzle just added to the feeling that this was a week to be survived rather than enjoyed.
We talk to our children and grandchildren on the phone. We connect using ZOOM to the ones in far off Massachusetts. The bright spot of the entire week was having our older granddaughter come to see us. She spent most of the day with us. We had lunch together, and later drove her in to Jerusalem to catch a bus home. It made up for our regular social session playing scrabble at the Jerusalem Scrabble Club. That session was cancelled due to COVID-19.
But this morning was different. When I ventured out this morning there wasn’t a cloud to be seen. The temperature was only about 2 degrees warmer, but the sunlight made it feel much warmer. The dogs (we have two) didn’t seem to notice the change at first. But when they were allowed out for a little free time in our fenced in yard they went forth quickly and happily. And they didn’t rapidly come back scratching at the door to be readmitted into the warmer house. The infection rates re still climbing, but it doesn’t seem as depressing when the sun is shining. I managed to run a load in the washing machine and hang it out to dry in the sunlight. Amazing how being able to do a little chore like that can actually make one feel better. I also collected all the trash in the house to dump. I did not do that when it was drizzling last week. I suppose that objectively, there really wasn’t that much difference in the conditions outside apart from the lack of clouds. But subjectively, it made a big difference.
