My Brief Career on the Stage

When I was in the 9th grade there was a tradition at the junior high school I attended that the 9th graders would put on a play for the 7th graders. The play that was chosen was about a senior prom where the prettiest girl in the school expected to go with the handsomest boy. But he did not ask her, at least not at first. She was insulted and decided to get back at him by asking one of the school nerds to take her. The nerd she selected was definitely socially inept and she had to give him dancing lessons. Just when it seemed like a lost cause, the hero relents, asks her to go with him, and everyone lives happily ever after or so it appears).

The leading role for the girl was played by my classmate. She was indeed, quite attractive. She was also the daughter of the local Rabbi. One of the sports team stars got to play the hero. I was selected for the top supporting role. I was the nerd. Mostly, I just had to act as if I couldn’t believe that the heroine chose me. Wearing glasses didn’t hurt, either. The dance lesson scenes were a hit. I just could not remember the steps (according to the script) and we got a few laughs. I also had to make an effort to slouch. bad posture is de riguer for a nerd. I don’t remember what I wore, but it’s likely I had my shirt only partly tucked in.

I never included this episode in one of my later job applications, but I never aspired to an acting career, so it’s probably just as well that I didn’t mention it.
