In Feb 2018 I published a picture of an Italian ship in WWI camouflage. I promised there would be more. Here are some. The top photo is a picture of a tanker. There were three tankers named Ansaldo. Each with a different pattern. All on them were camouflaged. Not all the pictures I’ve seen agree on which one is which. The pattern drawings are from contemporary sketches made in the US when the ships visited an American port. There are two different patterns identified as being on Ansaldo III. One is the featured image. The next picture is of a battleship. Benedetto Brin, that was lost during the war. It is followed by a drawing of the camouflage on a destroyer with a photograph showing that the pattern in the drawing was actually carried by that ship. The bottom picture is of a converted armored cruiser and shows that the Italians also tried the idea of tricking a submarine commander into thinking that the ship was under escort by smaller warships. In this case, there are 2 silhouettes painted on the side of the ship.
