A Scrabble Weekend, Hooray!!

One item I have almost never mentioned is that I am a committed scrabble player.  I play regularly, every week, at the Jerusalem Scrabble Club. The club has been one of the largest English language scrabble clubs in the world. We still get an attendance of about 30-40 players every Tuesday night. That’s a drop from our attendance in the past which was averaging almost 50 every week.  Nevertheless, when Tuesday night arrives my wife and I go into the big city to play scrabble.

This weekend we were invited to stay over at a friends home. It was an offer we could hardly refuse. To start with, she is an excellent cook and specializes in Indian dishes. Then after lunch, we have a scrabble afternoon. The players include about 8-10 of the lunch guests, who are joined by 2-4 more people who just drop in for the games. On weekends like this the play is almost entirely for fun. There is no real competition like we have at the club or at tournaments. I even played a few game of a scrabble variant called clabbers. It’s just like scrabble, except the order of the letters is unimportant. Any connecting letters must still make a real word (or be challenged off the board) but you can vary the placement of the letters in order to make a higher score.

It was a terrific weekend with good food, good friends, and good fun. Something I highly recommend to everyone
