Gaza Riots

In my post 4 days ago I mentioned Palestinian civil unrest and rioting in Gaza that was directed AGAINST Hamas. The demonstrations continued for at least tree days despite major efforts at suppressing them  by the Gazan police and military.  It has happened before. But this time it lasted longer. Gazans who dare to complain have always been treated badly. This has not been different. The Hamas controlled media made a very strong effort to blame Israel, first for the rioting itself, and later for the existence of the causes for the complaints that started it all. One Palestinian even set himself on fire in protest. That was something I believe that had never been seen there before.  The attempts to relieve internal complaints by focusing on an external enemy is nothing new. It looks to me like most Gazans aren’t buying it. It certainly doesn’t mean that Peace is suddenly about to break out. What it does show, though, is that the Hamas leadership needs to feed its citizens with more than just anti-Israel slogans.
