My models – Barnegat class small seaplane tenders

One central idea that ran through my entire collection was that each model represented a specific ship.  I tried to make every model appear as the original ship by painting them in the actual camouflage patterns they carried and modifying their armament, and sometimes other equipment, to match what was actually fitted at the time she was in that camouflage.

The Barnegat class was ideal for this treatment. I originally had 2 models made by Comet/Authenticast, and later added several more.  The real ships were expected to act as mother ships for seaplanes.  But a few were converted to other duties. The model at the top of this post shows USS Valcour in overall white as she was painted when she acted as flagship for the commander of US Naval Forces in the Persian Gulf.

The other  models all reflect actual differences in appearance for 8 other ships of the class. Absecon was given a catapult and 2 cranes and served as a training ship for aviators expected to fly small seaplanes from cruisers and battleships. Wachaprague was one of several sisters that was adapted to be a mother ship for PT Boat squadrons. Her structure was extended aft over the deck that was often left clear for placing large seaplanes that had been taken out of the water for maintenance.

Barnegat was fitted with a very large crane aft, subsequent ships were fitted with a smaller and lighter version. Armament was always being changed and most ships of the class had a combination of 5″ and anti-aircraft guns that were almost unique. in either number or placement. All of this is reflected in the models in my collection., as you can see below

  1. Say would you like to donate or maybe sell a model or painting, etc. Of an AVP 29 USS Rockaway to “Hanger B” HARP Historic Aircraft Restoration Program? Floyd Bennett field was its service area.

    1. Hi Dave
I’d be happy to sell all 9 of them for $2 each plus postage. I would mail them via Israel Post EMS (Express Mail Service) in one package. P&P cost $66. For only one model the price for P&P drops to $52. Please contact me at elisha6@bezeint.net if you’re interested.
