When I was transferred to a new ship, The USS Elokomin, she was just finishing a tour of duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. I flew from Norfolk, VA to Athens/Piraeus. After passing through Greek immigration control I checked when the ship was due to leave. I had an extra 3 days. I put most of my luggage in a locker and booked a quick flight to Israel, I got a 2 day vacation in Jerusalem, staying with friends, and then flew back to Greece. I went through passport control for the third time. Now I had entered Greece twice and left once. I took a taxi to the port where I caught a boat out to my ship. This time, it was a US Navy boat. There was no passport control. The ship sailed the next day. As far as I know, It’s possible the Greek border control people still have a discrepancy in their figures for foreign arrivals and departures. I often wondered if they thought I was still in Greece
