My father’s family came to Charleston, S.C. in 1840, I’ve collected stories about the family members for the period from their arrival until 1940, when I was born.
This is a photo of my great grandfather, Levi Wetherhorn, who served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. He was present as a member of the Charleston German Rifle company guarding the Citadel cadets when the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter.
At the end of the war, he was with the German Light Artillery protecting Charleston harbor and was captured while foraging. He was imprisoned, briefly, at Fort Sumter.
